A Clinical Study on Traumatic Amputation


Abstract
Amputation is necessary when trauma injure the tissues of a limb so badly that prosthesis is more beneficial in terms of function than to salvage the injured limb.
We reviewed 291, amputations in 283 amputees treated at Hanyang University Hospital f-om May 1972 through Oct. 1984, and the results are as follow:
1. In industrial accident, amputations of the upper extremities are more common thinn
those of the lower extremities in contrast to traffic accidents, in which cases lower extremity amputation are more common.
2. The most frequent complication is¢¥ ulceration or necrosis of the skin and these complications are more prevalent in traffic accident than any other causes.
3. The complication rate has the tendency to increase as the time interval between accident and operation be prolonged.
